David Green suggested our group go forward with the Carrollton Creative Writers Club website. Diana Black submitted a proposal, it was accepted, and she is presently working on the creation of our website. This valuable tool for our group will contain the newsletter, our calendar, author profiles and other information regarding our members and their accomplishments. Any suggestions for what you would like to see on our website should be emailed to Mary Wilburn, Beverly Bruemmer, or Diana Black. .. Welcome to Hank Somma, our newest member. Hank is a photographer/writer currently working on a photo book showcasing women who ride Harleys. .. CCWC now has a banner for book signings. Let’s hope that many of us put it to profitably productive use. .. November 13th is the deadline to RSVP for CCWC’s Christmas party, however, there is still time to add your name to the list below. We have reserved a room at the Mansion for Saturday, December 1st at 7:00 P.M. Thank you in advance for notifying Beverly Bruemmer if you will, or will not be attending. This will ensure we all have the best seating accommodations available for our group. Everyone will order from the menu, and pay individually. .. Here’s who we have on our list: FACILITATOR: 09/11/07 Tuesday AM Highlights: CCWC Newsletter October 2007 Page 2 .. Diana Black facilitated our meetings for October. Diana orchestrated a very informative visit by Brandy Moss of Axess Printing. Brandy shared some of the procedures, the company’s turnaround times, and discussed some of their affiliates for functions they don’t do in-house, such as hard back bindings and larger jobs. 09/13/07 Thursday PM Highlights: .. Richard presented how to create a template using a free word processor he found on the internet. His discussion included how to create headers/footers and basic word processor use. Thanks Richard. 09/23/07 Tuesday AM Highlights: .. Attendance was great for both meetings. The usual first and second meeting functions were reversed as best laid plans were swirled asunder. Diana, however, handled all so smoothly and calmly no one was the wiser, and we all had a great writers’ group month. Hats off to you Diana. 09/25/07 Thursday PM Highlights: .. While only three of us were in attendance, the group shared current works in progress, both new and revised. Upcoming Tuesday AM Highlights: .. Claire Baker facilitates our group meetings for November. Claire has arranged for Sybil Rosen-Thomas to address our group and discuss screen writing. Ms. Rosen-Thomas is multi-published in German, Spanish and English, and an accomplished playwright. Her first novel, Speed of Light won an award. READINGS: AM Readings: Beverly Bruemmer played the song written to accompany her children’s picture book, To Market, To Market In The Big Red Truck. We all took pleasure in hearing Jennifer Green’s lovely voice, and were in awe at her perfect elocution. The accompanying music was performed by Phil Coley at his recording studio in Bowden. He did a fine job of mixing and recording as well. John Stephens read from his action/adventure in progress. The portion he shared with us was centered in a much younger America where the protagonist reflected on his childhood family as he witnessed the death of loved ones. .. Reader’s comments: Joe Byrd read chapter 5 of his horror manuscript, Amulet This story takes place in Texas on the shore where an ancient evil rises. We met an innocent, abused puppy dog, a bad guy doing unspeakable acts, and a victim in this chapter. .. Reader’s Comments: I appreciated the input from members concerning the chapter I read from my novel. I will look into the comments about the dog and will change a part to reflect the advice I received about a criminal’s inability to accept guilt. PM Readings: Beverly Smith Once again presented an even more polished version of her first chapters. Her voice gets clearer and grows stronger with each rewrite. Also she is taking on technology head on as she blazes new pathways into word processing! Lily Ward remained reticent. Dave Green read the next chapter (3) in his work in progress, the Doorknob. In this thrilling chapter, Zeke finds himself trying to con the crazed Ice Cream man (thanks TC and George Beckley), but ends up getting himself caught, the chapter closes with Zeke locked in the ice cream truck at the mercy of a man who will gladly grind him up and make Zeke-crunch ice cream. CHECK YOUR CALENDARS: Please send events to Diana via dblack@sprynet.com for consideration. And yes Diana’s e-mail is finally correct….(DG) The Christmas sale at the Carrollton Creative Arts Center is presently in session. The sale ends on December 15th, so tell your friends to stop by in support of our published authors and accomplished artists. Frame of Mind is hosting a book signing for Beverly Bruemmer, Joe Byrd, Mary Cunningham, Joann Dunn, and Mary Wilburn. Diana Black’s artwork will also be available at this event, December 8th and 9th Saturday, 10-5, Sunday, 12-5. Brian Corrigan will host the Dahlonega seminar the second weekend of February. Mary Wilburn will be speaking in one of the break-out sessions along with Norman Chastain for Murder Goes South. They will address the pitfalls and paradoxes of getting published for the first time. Murder Goes South’s banquet is on Friday evening January 25th and Mary will speak at the sessions on Saturday, January 26th. Everyone please stop in to Horton’s Book Store on the square and ask for Joe Byrd’s works. He has three titles displayed, book and CD; the more we ask for our authors works, the more attention the book stores and the public will give us. PERSONALS: .. The SCBWI conference was October 19th, and 20th, in Birmingham, AL. Friday evening’s event was attended by Denise Williams and David Green. .. For Saturday’s all-day event Denise and David were joined by Mary Cunningham, Diana Black, Beverly Bruemmer and Amber Pickle. .. Everyone agreed the day was enjoyable with good information gleaned from the workshops. Guest speakers included Elizabeth Parisi, Mary Ann Rodman, Mark McVeigh, Diane Hamilton, and many more. .. The general consensus was that the fall conference seemed to be more organized than the Springmingle, possibly because it is smaller. .. Diana Black spent most of the day with Elizabeth Parisi, Executive Art Director of Scholastic. Diana shared that Ms. Parisi was very warm and open. She encouraged each attendee to send postcards to her as more illustrations or works of art are developed, as she keeps what catches her eye on file. .. Mary Cunningham shared that she had an interesting day, even though she sat, totally alone (sniff) at the noon book signing. Mary also graciously donated a book to the SCBWI book basket hoping it will go to a library that needs it. She stated, “With all the cut backs, libraries have no discretionary money for books these days.” .. No one mentioned the luxurious ride, chauffeured by Ron Pickle, while Emma, Amber’s Durango, sang gloriously as we sailed home with no brakes. .. In addition to the comments above, David Green, (me) attended many of the inner working meetings of the Southern Breeze organization, being invited as the webmaster for the region. All of the events were well staffed and organized. It was a wonderful opportunity to network, and I met many people in the same boat as most of us are; either looking for that first book to be published or trying to market the one(s) we do have. I do recommend getting involved with this group of people as it has broadened my horizons and added a couple Mississippians, some Alabamians, and a few Tennessee folk to my list of writing friends. .. Richard Anderson’s little lamb conquered her bout with pneumonia with flying colors. Thank you all for your prayers. We are all very relieved and happy for you and your family Richard. .. Mary Cunningham’s Cynthia’s Attic: Curse Of The Bayou hits the shelves December 1st. She is addressing 3 children's literature classes at the University of West Georgia, Friday, November 9th. She will also be at the Savannah Children’s Book Festival in Forsyth Park on November 17th, from 10-4, and a book signing at Borders, November 24th from 1-3 pm .. Mary C. also has an interview and story coming out in her hometown (Corydon, Indiana) newspaper on November 14th. A local teacher will be interviewed for the article as well; she has read Mary’s books to her classes 3 years in a row and used them as a teaching guide. .. Beverly Bruemmer has made her debut with To Market, To Market In The Big Red Truck. She presented her package of story book, read-along/singalong audio CD with accompanying activity book during her signing at Mitchell’s open house November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. .. Diana Black, Mary Cunningham, and Beverly Bruemmer attended the opening for the Christmas sale at the Arts Center, Friday evening, November 2nd and presented their works for signing. .. Hank Somma submitted Women Harley Riders in 2006 to Silver Eye Center for Photography for their Fellowship 2006 competition. His entry was selected for exhibition in the New Works Gallery Online.
